Nigella Lawson confirmed as the new judge on The Great British Bake Off – a classic British show gets fresh flavour

The Great British Bake Off has officially entered a new era — and it comes with one of the most iconic names in British food.

Nigella Lawson has been confirmed as the new judge on The Great British Bake Off, replacing long-serving judge Prue Leith after her nine-series run.

And by her own admission, Nigella is barely containing her excitement.

“A Huge Honour — And a Little Daunting”

Speaking after the announcement, Nigella described the moment as surreal.

“I’m uncharacteristically rather lost for words,” she said.
“Of course it’s daunting to follow in the footsteps of Prue Leith — and Mary Berry before her — two great dames of food television. But I’m also absolutely bubbling with excitement.”

For Nigella, Bake Off is not just another TV format.

“The Great British Bake Off is more than a programme,” she added.
“It’s a national treasure — and to be entrusted with it is a huge honour.”

She went on to say she feels “giddily grateful” to be joining the famous tent alongside fellow judge Paul Hollywood and hosts Alison Hammond and Noel Fielding.

Prue Leith Gives Her Blessing

Prue Leith, who announced her decision to step down earlier this month, was quick to throw her support behind her successor.

“I’m thrilled that Nigella is joining Bake Off,” Prue said.
“She’s sassy, fun, and she really knows her onions — and her croissants, cakes and crumbles.”

At 86, Prue explained her departure was about slowing down rather than stepping away from food entirely.

“Bake Off has been a fabulous part of my life,” she said.
“But now feels like the right time to take my foot off the pedal — and enjoy my garden.”

A Return to the Tent — and to British TV

Nigella’s appointment marks a high-profile return to British television, her first major ongoing role since Cook, Eat, Repeat aired in 2020.

In recent years, she has appeared as a guest judge on MasterChef Australia and fronted festive specials, including Nigella’s Amsterdam Christmas in 2023 — but Bake Off places her firmly back at the heart of primetime TV.

Channel 4 executives have called the move “a dream pairing,” with commissioning boss Ian Katz describing it as:

“The marriage of two great British icons: Bake Off and Nigella.”

Producers say Nigella’s warmth, wit and authority make her a “perfect fit” for the tent — promising a series that blends comfort, glamour and unmistakable culinary confidence.

When Will Viewers See Her?

Nigella is expected to begin filming in the spring, with the new series airing later this year.
